How to Access Smart Digital Service Records (UK)

Last verified: July 2026Unconfirmed

The Smart digital record system

Smart is really two brands for record-keeping purposes: older cars in the Mercedes-Benz orbit and new EVs on their own platform. Establish which era the car is from first — that determines where its history lives.

Smart keeps its maintenance record in the manufacturer/dealer system. Whether a paper book is issued depends on the model and year.

Route 1: The owner portal

If you own the car, the smart / hello smart app account is the first place to look.

  1. Identify the era: pre-2020 smart cars sit in the Mercedes-Benz network; new #1/#3 models use the hello smart app.
  2. For older cars, use a Mercedes-Benz Retailer to retrieve records by VIN.
  3. For new cars, register in the hello smart app and add the vehicle.
  4. Confirm the definitive record with the relevant dealer network.

Smart split from a Daimler brand to a Mercedes-Benz / Geely joint venture, so record-keeping differs sharply between old and new models.

Route 2: Through a dealer

Older smart records live in the Mercedes-Benz system; new smart uses a separate retail network. Confirm which applies before requesting.

  • Prints for the owner: yes, on request by VIN
  • Prints for a prospective buyer: at the dealer's discretion (unconfirmed)
  • Typical charge: Unconfirmed

Bring the V5C and photo ID if you’re the owner. See the V5C guidance on GOV.UK. Know a real charge for Smart? Help us verify it.

Route 3: Independent garages & SERMI

Mixed provenance; SERMI concerns security data. Service-history access is not offered to independents.

Background: the SERMI scheme (sermi.eu) and our plain-English SERMI guide.

Route 4: An instant report

If you don’t own the car yet — you’re buying used — or you simply want the record without a dealer visit, an aggregated report pulls the franchised-network data against the VIN and returns it in one place. It’s the most direct route when account access isn’t available. You can FindServiceHistory pulls Smart network records via FindServiceHistory's instant report.

Known quirks & gaps

  • The brand's ownership change (Daimler to a Mercedes-Benz / Geely JV) is the single biggest source of confusion — old and new smarts are effectively different systems.
  • Early ForTwo/ForFour cars may only have a paper book.
  • New #1 and #3 EVs are sold through a distinct retail model.

Frequently asked questions

Does Smart still issue a paper service book?

Whether a paper book was issued for a given Smart depends on the model and year; we haven't confirmed this across the range. Either way, the authoritative record is the digital one held against the VIN.

Can I see a Smart's service history before buying it?

Smart's owner tools are tied to the registered owner's account, so as a prospective buyer you generally can't log in and view the history yourself. The practical options are to have the seller show you the record, ask a dealer to confirm it by VIN, or use an aggregated report that pulls the franchised-network data directly.

How much do Smart dealers charge to print service records?

Smart dealers don't publish a standard charge for printing service records — some do it free as a goodwill gesture, others apply an admin fee, and buyer (non-owner) requests are at each dealer's discretion. We're collecting first-hand figures; if you have one, we'd like to hear it.

Does the smart / hello smart app app show full service history?

How much completed history smart / hello smart app shows varies by model and connectivity; treat it as a starting point and confirm the full record via a Smart dealer or an aggregated report.

Can an independent garage access my Smart service history?

Not really — independent garages can buy technical and repair information to work on your car, but they generally can't read your full franchised Smart service history. SERMI, which is sometimes mentioned here, governs access to security-related data (keys and immobilisers), not the maintenance record.
