Cambelt Intervals by Engine — Belt, Wet Belt or Chain (UK)

A cambelt interval belongs to an engine, and manufacturers sell belt and chain engines alongside each other under the same model name. That is why “does a Ford Focus have a cambelt” has no answer and “does the 1.0 EcoBoost in this Focus have a cambelt” does. Every row below is one drive on one engine — and note that some engines appear twice, because they have two.

Why some rows are blank

A blank interval is a deliberate answer, not a hole. For a few very common engines the figures in circulation contradict each other — the 2.0 TDI is quoted at 130,000 miles, 140,000 miles and a five-year limit, and those cannot all be right for one car. Choosing the most confident-sounding number would make this table look complete and make it worse. Where that happens, the engine’s own page sets out what the competing figures are, what independent specialists do instead, and why.

Questions people ask

How do I know if my car has a cambelt or a chain?

It depends on the engine, not the model or the badge. Manufacturers routinely sell belt and chain engines side by side in the same car — a Volkswagen Golf can have either. Check the engine, not the model name, and if you cannot identify it from the paperwork a franchised dealer can confirm it against the VIN.

What is a wet belt and why does it matter?

A wet belt runs inside the engine, submerged in oil, rather than outside behind a cover. The design reduces friction, but the belt degrades in the oil and its debris can block the oil pickup, starving the engine. Failures therefore tend to be oil-starvation failures rather than snapped-belt ones, and they can happen well before the published interval. Ford and Stellantis have both shortened their published intervals substantially.

Does a timing chain ever need replacing?

There is normally no scheduled replacement, but a chain is still a wear item on some engines. Chain stretch is diagnosed by reading measured camshaft timing deviation rather than pre-empted at a mileage, so a complete service history tells you nothing about its condition — which is worth knowing before buying a higher-mileage example.

Why does this site sometimes show no interval at all?

Because we have not established one we would stand behind. For some very common engines the published figures circulating do not reconcile with each other, and picking one would be inventing a fact. Where that happens we say so, show what the trade does instead, and point you at a franchised dealer for the schedule against your own VIN.
