The Quiet Revision: How Wet Belt Intervals Were Cut After the Cars Were Sold
Manufacturers who put a cambelt inside the engine oil have all shortened their published replacement intervals — retrospectively. Hundreds of thousands of UK owners are holding a handbook their maker no longer stands behind.

What a wet belt is, and why manufacturers used one
A conventional cambelt runs outside the engine, dry, behind a cover. A wet belt runs inside it, submerged in the engine oil. The design reduces friction and helps meet tightening emissions targets, which is why it spread across small turbocharged engines through the 2010s.
The trade-off is that the belt spends its life in a fluid that degrades it. As it breaks down it sheds material into the sump, and that debris blocks the oil pickup. The engine then fails from oil starvation rather than from a snapped belt — which is why these failures tend to destroy far more than the timing components, and why they can happen well before any published interval.
The pattern in the revisions
Taken individually, each revision reads as routine engineering housekeeping. Taken together they form a pattern: in every case we have documented a revision, the published interval moved in one direction only.
Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost is the clearest example, because the starting point was not a long interval but no interval at all — the belt was presented as a component that would last as long as the engine. It now carries a figure of 10 years or 100,000 miles. Ford's 2.0 EcoBlue diesel, which powers Transits, was cut from 10 years or 240,000 km to 6 years or 160,000 km, and Ford named the cause: oil dilution from diesel particulate filter regeneration, which is worst on exactly the short-journey urban work vans do most.
Stellantis followed the same path with the PureTech, the 1.0 and 1.2 three-cylinder petrol sold as a Peugeot, a Citroën, a DS and — after the PSA takeover — a Vauxhall. Its interval fell from around 10 years or 175,000 km to 6 years or 100,000 km, alongside a revised belt specification and, in some markets, goodwill or extended cover.
Honda's 1.0 VTEC Turbo is the counter-example that proves how little the published figure settles. It still carries 5 years or 100,000 miles, unrevised, on an engine carrying two wet belts — while Honda has separately replaced belts and pulleys with countermeasure parts under recall, and UK specialists work to roughly 4 years or 60,000 miles because failures are reported from about 35,000. An unrevised interval is not a reassuring one; it can simply mean the revision was handled as a recall instead.
Why the owner is usually the last to know
A recall obliges a manufacturer to contact keepers. A revised service interval does not. None of the changes described here was handled as a blanket UK recall, so the mechanism for reaching an owner is a franchised dealer noticing at the next service — and many of these cars have long since left the franchised network for independents, precisely because they are cheap cars past their warranty.
The result is a large population of vehicles whose handbook, service portal and owner's understanding all reflect a superseded figure. For a used buyer the practical consequence is sharper still: a car advertised as having a full service history may have been serviced faithfully to an interval that no longer applies.
The chain that isn't the whole answer
Both manufacturers have since moved these engines to a chain-driven camshaft, and that change is widely read as the end of the story. For the cam drive, it is. But both kept a smaller wet belt driving the oil pump, running in the same oil, capable of shedding the same debris into the same pickup — and neither classes it as a scheduled service item.
That matters because of how people search. An owner who establishes that their engine has a timing chain reasonably concludes there is nothing to replace. On these engines that conclusion is incomplete, and the changeover years do not align neatly with model years, so an early car in a nominally chain-era model may still carry the belt.
What this means for a service record
On a wet-belt engine the service history stops being administrative and becomes mechanical evidence. Oil-change intervals are what determine belt condition, so a gap in the record is not merely a negotiating point — it is a missing input to the one question that decides whether the engine survives.
A documented belt change is correspondingly valuable, and worth more here than on almost any other small engine, because the alternative is paying for the job again or gambling. Where the record is patchy, a franchised dealer can confirm what the network holds against the VIN.
Methodology
Drawn from the per-engine maintenance dataset published at /maintenance/, which records each timing drive separately along with its published interval, that interval's revision history, and the sources behind each. We counted an interval as revised where a manufacturer's published figure changed after the engine went on sale. Figures are given in the units the source printed, with the miles equivalent derived and validated at build time to guard against unit errors. Where sources disagreed or nothing authoritative could be established, no figure was published — several very common engines therefore appear in the dataset with no interval at all, and that is a deliberate answer rather than a gap. This is a study of what manufacturers have published and revised, not a measurement of failure rates, which we have no primary data on.
