Maintenance data quality

Every gap the dataset knows about, listed. Anything that would be wrong to publish fails the build instead of appearing here; what is left are the things we haven’t established yet, and they are the research queue rather than a defect list.

Records that don’t yet earn a page

Page eligibility is derived, not decided: an engine needs genuine per-engine editorial, something non-obvious to say, two independent sources with one of them authoritative, and real UK fitment. Anything short of that stays a row on the brand and hub tables, which are indexed. It is not hidden — it just doesn’t get a URL of its own.

Brand records — open warnings

The 47 manufacturer records got their own build-time guard in August 2026. They had gone without one: the drive-type corrections that produced the maintenance rules all landed on the newer half of the site, which is how a dataset ends up with its weakest checks sitting on its oldest data. Nothing failed when the guard was switched on, but it made the backlog below countable for the first time.

Two of these are worth reading rather than skimming. BW1 flags prose repeated across brands in different corporate groups. Where brands share a group they also genuinely share a portal — Citroën, DS, Fiat, Abarth and Jeep really do use one Stellantis system — so identical wording there is honest and the rule ignores it. A hit means the same sentence turned up on two brands with no relationship, which means it was templated rather than researched. The fix is to establish the real answer, never to paraphrase the sentence until the check goes quiet. BW4 covers the dealer-desk fields, and those are blank because they need somebody to ring dealers and ask. Desk research cannot settle them, so they are reported once each rather than 47 times over.

What fails the build

These never reach this page, because the data barrel throws on them in a production build: an interval published without a citation, a chain carrying a replacement interval, a belt figure outside the plausible range, a distance whose stated miles disagree with the source value it came from, a revision history that has drifted from the headline figure, a “verified” tier resting on anything short of a manufacturer or OE-supplier source, an engine declared as wet-belt or as an unscheduled chain without two independent citations for that drive type, and a “filled for life” transmission with no independent counterpoint recorded.

The brand records enforce their own set: a record citing nothing, a source that is not https or that points at our own funnel rather than a primary source, a “verified” tier resting on anything short of a manufacturer or technical-authority source, a lastVerified date in the future, an owner portal declared to exist with no name or address, access steps recorded for a brand that has no portal at all, and two brand verdicts that overlap enough to read as templated.

That second-to-last rule was added in August 2026 after a reader corrected us. The 1.5 BlueHDi (DV5) had been published as a wet-belt engine when it runs a conventional dry belt and an internal cam chain. The claim carried no source, and nothing in the schema required one, because the checks all guarded the interval rather than the drive type it hung from. Re-checking the rest of the dataset against that failure turned up two more: the Fiat 1.3 MultiJet published as a belt engine when it runs a chain, and Honda’s 1.0 VTEC Turbo published as a chain engine when it carries two wet belts. All three are corrected.

Requiring one citation turned out not to be enough. In August 2026 we went back through every wet-belt and every unscheduled-chain classification in the dataset — 27 drives across 33 engines — and re-checked each against a second, independent source, preferring evidence keyed to the engine code over anything written about a model or a brand: a manufacturer’s own service procedure, or whether the trade sells that code a chain kit or a belt kit. Every classification held. The sourcing behind several did not. The clearest case was Honda: our chain entry for the 1.5 VTEC Turbo and 1.6 i-DTEC rested on a lookup site whose stated position is that every Civic built since 2006 runs a chain — a claim this dataset already contradicts, because the 1.0 VTEC Turbo sold from 2017 to 2022 runs two wet belts. The classification was right and its evidence was worthless, and those are not the same thing. It now cites a genuine Honda chain kit for the 1.5 and a chain kit catalogued against the i-DTEC’s own engine code, from the same supplier that lists a genuine Honda timing belt for the 1.0.

The build rule was tightened to match: two independent publishers, counted by site, so that two pages from one source no longer read as corroboration. That is the rule the Honda entry would have failed.

A second Honda correction followed in August 2026, and it is the more embarrassing of the two. We stated in six places — across the brand record and two engine records — that Honda’s Digital Service Record covers cars from 2022. Honda’s own page, which we were already citing for the claim, says it is available for connected cars launched since 2020. The date was wrong and so was the shape of it: Honda’s wording turns on when the model launched, not when the car was registered, so two cars of the same age can get different answers. It is corrected everywhere. The lesson is narrow and worth stating plainly — the citation was right there, and nobody re-read it.

Read the wider methodology on the about and methodology page.
