How to Access Tesla Digital Service Records (UK)

Last verified: July 2026Reported

The Tesla digital record system

Tesla is the clearest example of the buyer's blind spot: the record exists and is excellent, but it is locked to the current owner's account with no dealer to ask. Before buying, either have the seller show you the app or rely on the MOT trail and an aggregated report.

The record itself is kept as Tesla service history (in-app), digital in the UK from around 2012. Newer cars may have no paper book at all — the record lives entirely in the system, keyed to the VIN.

Route 1: The owner portal

If you own the car, the Tesla app / Tesla Account account is the first place to look. You'll need to prove ownership to link the vehicle.

  1. Sign in to the Tesla app or your Tesla Account with the owner's credentials.
  2. Open the vehicle and go to the Service section.
  3. View past service visits, invoices and upcoming recommendations directly in the app.
  4. Request records from Tesla Service if you need a formal copy.

Tesla keeps service history in the owner's account and app — but it is tied to that account, so a prospective buyer cannot see it without the current owner sharing access.

Route 2: Through a dealer

Tesla has no franchised dealers — servicing is done by Tesla Service Centres and mobile service. Tesla generally will not release a car's service history to a non-owner, which is the crux of the buyer problem.

  • Prints for the owner: yes, on request by VIN
  • Prints for a prospective buyer: generally no
  • Typical charge: Unconfirmed

Bring the V5C and photo ID if you’re the owner. See the V5C guidance on GOV.UK. Know a real charge for Tesla? Help us verify it.

Route 3: Independent garages & SERMI

Tesla operates a closed service model; independent access is limited and SERMI concerns security data, not the service record.

A growing independent Tesla-specialist sector exists, but access to Tesla's own records is restricted to the account holder.

Background: the SERMI scheme (sermi.eu) and our plain-English SERMI guide.

Route 4: An instant report

If you don’t own the car yet — you’re buying used — or you simply want the record without a dealer visit, an aggregated report pulls the franchised-network data against the VIN and returns it in one place. It’s the most direct route when account access isn’t available. You can see the aggregated Tesla report option via FindServiceHistory's instant report.

Known quirks & gaps

  • No dealers: everything runs through Tesla directly, so the usual 'ask a dealer' route does not exist.
  • Service history lives in the owner's Tesla account and does not transfer visibly to a buyer.
  • Over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics mean much 'servicing' is software, not workshop visits.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tesla still issue a paper service book?

Tesla has effectively moved to digital records, so newer cars may have no paper book at all — the history lives in the manufacturer/dealer system and is retrieved by VIN.

Can I see a Tesla's service history before buying it?

Tesla's owner tools are tied to the registered owner's account, so as a prospective buyer you generally can't log in and view the history yourself. The practical options are to have the seller show you the record, ask a dealer to confirm it by VIN, or use an aggregated report that pulls the franchised-network data directly.

How much do Tesla dealers charge to print service records?

Tesla dealers don't publish a standard charge for printing service records — some do it free as a goodwill gesture, others apply an admin fee, and buyer (non-owner) requests are at each dealer's discretion. We're collecting first-hand figures; if you have one, we'd like to hear it.

Does the Tesla app / Tesla Account app show full service history?

Yes — Tesla app / Tesla Account is one of the more transparent owner apps and can show completed services carried out in the Tesla network, not just upcoming reminders. It still only works for the account holder.

Can an independent garage access my Tesla service history?

Not really — independent garages can buy technical and repair information to work on your car, but they generally can't read your full franchised Tesla service history. SERMI, which is sometimes mentioned here, governs access to security-related data (keys and immobilisers), not the maintenance record.
