Ford ran the cam belt inside the engine, submerged in oil, and at launch presented it as a component that would last as long as the engine did. It has since been given a replacement interval that has moved more than once, always downwards, and always retrospectively — which means the figure printed in a car's handbook at first registration is frequently not the figure Ford now stands behind. For anyone buying one, the question is not whether the belt was changed on schedule but which schedule the previous owner was working to, and a documented belt change is worth more here than on almost any other small petrol engine.

Known issues
- Belt degradation sheds material into the sump, which blocks the oil pickup and starves the engine of pressure. The failure is therefore usually an oil-starvation failure rather than a snapped-belt one, and it can happen well before the published interval.
- Oil condition matters more than on a conventional engine because the belt lives in it. Extended or missed oil changes accelerate belt breakdown directly, so a patchy service history on this engine is a mechanical concern and not merely a paperwork one.
- Failures have been reported from mileages far below Ford's published interval, which is why specialist recommendations sit well under it.
