MG SAIC petrol (1.0T / 1.5T)
The badge shows the lowest confidence tier on this page and the date the oldest fact was checked — the weakest link, not the best.
Timing drive
Timing chain
No scheduled replacement — but that is not the same as nothing to watch for. See the known issues below.
Chain driven, with no replacement interval established. Sourced per engine code rather than across the brand: chain parts are catalogued separately against the 1.0 T-GDi (G10DT) and the 1.5 T (15E4E). It does not follow that every SAIC engine is a chain — the naturally aspirated 1.5 VTi-Tech is a different unit and is not covered here. These are young cars and a long-term wear picture has not yet emerged.
MG's petrol engines are chain driven, so there is no belt to plan for — but this is also the brand where the least long-term data exists, simply because the cars are young. No wear pattern has emerged, and we would rather say that than imply an absence of reports is the same as a clean record. What is unusually consequential on an MG is the service schedule itself: the back half of the seven-year warranty is explicitly conditional on a full history to MG's schedule with correct parts, so a gap costs cover on a car where the warranty is a large part of the resale case.

Scheduled servicing
- Regime:
- fixed
- Interval:
- Not established — Not established. MG's warranty makes the years four to seven conditional on a full service history, so the schedule has commercial weight here.
- Oil specification:
- ACEA C5 — SAE 0W-20 on the 1.5 T, SAE 5W-30 on the 1.0 T
Known issues
- The UK fleet is young enough that no long-term chain wear picture exists yet, which is a gap in the evidence rather than a positive finding.
Cars this engine is fitted to
- Mg — ZS (2017–present), HS (2018–present), MG3 (2018–present)
Questions people ask
Does the MG SAIC petrol (1.0T / 1.5T) have a cambelt or a chain?
A chain, with no scheduled replacement. That does not make it maintenance-free — chain wear is diagnosed on condition rather than pre-empted at a mileage, so a complete service history says nothing about it.
Is the MG SAIC petrol (1.0T / 1.5T) an interference engine?
We haven't confirmed this. Treat it as if it were an interference design until a dealer confirms otherwise.
How often does the MG SAIC petrol (1.0T / 1.5T) need servicing?
We haven't established a published schedule for this engine. Ask a franchised dealer to quote it against your VIN.
Outstanding recalls
We don’t hold recall data and won’t pretend to — it comes from the SMMT via DVSA, and a per-vehicle check needs a VIN rather than a registration. The official checker is free: check vehicle recalls on GOV.UK. You’ll need the make and the VIN, which is on the V5C and usually visible through the base of the windscreen.
Worth doing on any used car: a recall is free to have done regardless of age or how many owners the car has had, and an outstanding one often survives a change of keeper simply because nobody forwarded the letter.
